If portability is an important consideration when buying a projector, then the weight is undoubtedly a key consideration. Obviously, weight has to be viewed along with other factors such as brightness, resolution and price since the quality of the presentation is more important than the prospect of carrying a few extra pounds.
Ultra - light projectors that are less than five pounds are now available in the market and ideally suited for those who want the projector along with them on frequent travels. For an occasional traveler, a projector weight of even up to 10 pounds may suit their needs. Projectors weighing more than 10-15 pounds are usually fixed-installation models to be used for large audiences at large venues.
Besides projector weight and the other key parameters already discussed in other sections of this buyer guide, there are some additional features & accessories that you must consider when buying a projector. These include:
- Zoom lens - gives you the flexibility to adjust the image size, which becomes important when projecting in different environments.
- Keystone correction - useful when the projector may have to project images on the projection surface at an angle. Vertical and horizontal keystone options are available and may be necessary depending on how the projector can be set up to project on the screen. Realistically, one may not always get to place the projector straight in line with the projection screen and therefore this feature is very important.
- Contrast: High contrast ratios, say in the range of 1500:1 generally provide excellent images. The contrast becomes more important in a dark room.
- Multiple input ports - to allow for more than one video source or computer to connect to the project simultaneously.
- Video signal standards - Check for compatibility with different video signals.
- Remote control - you could look at a regular remote or an infra-red remote. Ideally, the remote should be able to handle most of the important activities when making a presentation such as moving slides forward or backward, laser point to something on the screen or may be even zoom in.
- Memory - This is useful if the same presentation is being repeated at different locations, which means that a computer will not be necessary.
