The resolution of a projector, which is basically the number of pixels used by the projector to create the image, is of the most important parameters. They are generally denoted in the same manner as display resolutions on a computer screen are, such as 1024 x 768.

Higher resolution projectors are generally more expensive than their lower resolution counterparts, though these projectors are also capable of displaying the finer details. It makes sense to go for higher resolution projectors only if fine details are required to be displayed.

There are various resolution options available, though the most common and popular ones are the SVGA (800 x 600 pixels) and the XGA (1024 x 768 pixels). Besides these, there are higher resolutions such as SXGA (1280 x 1024), SXGA+ (1400 x 1050 pixels) and UXGA (1600 x 1200 pixels).However, opting for these resolutions will increase the price tag of your projector manifold. The native resolution of a projector is one for which it is designed to work best, though projectors are able to work at higher or lower resolutions.

While choosing the ideal resolution for your projector, it is extremely critical to ensure that it matches the resolution of your computer. For a example, if one is using a notebook computer with XGA resolution, using a projector with XGA resolution will yield the best results in terms of image quality.

Though modern projectors are capable of projecting input signals different from their native resolutions, sharpness and detail are lost in the process of scaling or converting the resolution. The loss in quality of the image is more pronounced when a smaller resolution is made larger than when a larger resolution input signal is converted in a lower resolution.
