CCTV pricing factors

CCTV systems can be broadly classified into following three types (in terms of price): expensive, value for money and low end or inexpensive. Of course, price considerations have to be viewed together with the expectations from the system, quality and longevity.

A CCTV system comprises of camera, lens, monitor, recording device and cabling. All these components can be rolled into a single system at varying prices given the quality and benefits offered by various manufacturers. Alternatively products can be integrated by assembling the components of your choice and price to arrive at a unique customized package.

Apart from the price of the system a dealer will also charge for installation. Installation and maintenance contracts should be compared with prevailing rates with other dealers before agreeing to the price. It is advisable to avoid low-end packages or too-good-to-be true deals.

The competitive price for a single camera CCTV system with installation typically ranges from $500 to $1000, which includes the recording device, camera lens and monitor. The price could vary if the buyer requires a high-end camera, multiple cameras, hi tech lens, high end recording or information storing device.

CCTV camera and lens
A basic branded set of CCTV camera and lens are fairly priced in the range of $150-$250 and branded cameras are more reliable as compared to unbranded or less popular brands. Factors that may increase a buyer’s budget include: high resolution, sensitivity and additional features such as hidden camera, PTZ lens etc. A camera may be fitted with or without a lens. Lens prices may range from $100 to $300 for a manual or auto iris lens depending on the size while automatic zoom lenses range from $800 and $2,000.

CCTV monitors and recording devices:
Monitors are available in regular CRT or latest flat panel models. Other features that could decide monitor pricing are: screen size, resolution and sound quality. CRT monitors range from $150 to $500 while flat panels are available in the range of $300 to $5000 plus.

Recording devices such as DVRs range from $800-$1500 for the basic device, with additional charges for additional memory and inputs. Alternatively, VCRs are fairly less expensive though outdated in terms of technology. These are typically priced in the range of $300-$600.

CCTV peripherals
Enclosures or camera housing for weather and vandal resistance can increase your budget by $25-$200 depending on the degree of protection provided.
