Market research firm ABI Research projects that spending on biometrics technologies for security purposes would reach $7.3 billion by 2013, which will be more than double the project spend of about $3 billion in 2008.  The projection is part of a new study by the firm, more details of which can be found here.

Growth will be driven by increased emphasis on security in both the public and private sectors; equally important is the fact that there has been greater standardization which has enabled the emergence of more interoperable systems. The key biometrics advancements have been in the area of face, iris, hand, and speech recognition systems. Meanwhile fingerprint recognition system will continue to be the dominant biometric measurement system.

On this topic, the article Biometrics- A view of the future by John Davies, MD of TDSi presents quite an indepth view of the potential impact of future developments in biometrics on the security industry as a whole.
Buck & Hickman is now offering equipment leasing options for high value machinery and equipment, including machines such as welding & fume extraction machines, to help businesses save on capital expenditure.

The flexible leasing options offer leases of two or more years with weekly & monthly repayment options, with initial outlay of just one month’s payment as deposit. The company is offering the leasing option since a large number of industrial organizations prefer to lease rather than buy, especially since it improves cash flow by minimizing up front payments and the cost spread out over time.

The advantage of leasing is that the company can have the asset and pay for it from the income generated by the asset. Moreover, lease payments are tax-deductible, besides making organizations immune from the equipment getting obsolete.
Kyocera Mita America has added to its portfolio of document management solutions with the KYOcapture Express, a document capture workflow solution targeted specifically at small and medium businesses (SMBs) that intend to enhance their efficiency and reduce operating costs in their everyday document workflows.

Working in conjunction with some of Kyocera’s multi-functional products (MFPs), KYOcapture Express allows for full-text searching directly from the MFP and converts them into multiple formats to route across multiple destinations (fax, emails, network folders and FTP). KYOcapture Express works well with the KM-C3232, KM-C3225, KM-C2520, KM-3050, KM-4050, KM-5050, KM-6030, and KM-8030 models of MFPs.

KYOcapture Express can be purchased from dealers for a suggested retail price of $600.
BioLink has introduced the BioLink FingerPass IC, a biometric terminal that uses fingerprints, contactless cards and/or PIN-code for access control and tracking time spent by employees inside the office.

After the terminal identifies an employee, it instructs an electro-magnetic door look, turnstile or gate to open while registering and storing the arrival or departure of the concerned person. Since biometric factors such as fingerprints are not affected by loss, theft or forgery, FingerPass IC offers a power access control solution. The system is ideal for regular office staff, while contact-less cards can be used for providing access to occasional visitors. Moreover, a multi-factor access control system, using both contact less card and fingerprint identification, can be used to protect highly secure areas.

The BioLink FingerPass IC can operate independently with its own keypad and display. It can also operate in combination with BioTime, a biometric time tracking and access control system by using the BioTime software. The advantage of using the latter is that it can centralize access control and time monitoring features for the enterprise as a whole and therefore enable use of the FingerPass IC system immediately and across the organization.

The terminal’s internal memory has a storage capacity of up to 8000 event records. Besides the keypad and display, the FingerPass IC comes with an optical fingerprint scanner of 508 dpi resolution and contactless Mifare card reader.
